About the exam

What is the IME PESCI?

IMGs applying for limited or provisional registration may be required to undergo a PESCI. The Medical Board of Australia considers the information from the PESCI when deciding whether to grant registration.

It is an objective assessment of your knowledge, skills, clinical experience and attributes, to determine whether you are suitable to practise in a specific position. The Institute of Medical Education (IME) is an AMC-accredited PESCI provider.

About the IME PESCI

Who needs to sit a PESCI?

IMGs applying for limited or provisional registration may be required to complete one. Check your requirements with the Medical Board of Australia.

How long is the interview?

Generally 60–90 minutes.

Can I sit the IME PESCI online?

Yes. IME offers both face-to-face and virtual PESCIs, and candidates from all states are eligible to apply.

What do I need for an online PESCI?

A private, quiet space with a stable internet connection. Test your equipment beforehand and make sure your device meets Zoom's requirements. Virtual backgrounds aren't allowed, so your surroundings should look professional.

What is the supervision level, and why does it matter?

The supervision level on your Position Description is used directly for your PESCI interview. Most IMGs sit at Level 1 supervision and progress through the levels toward independent practice.

Can I change my documents after applying?

You may revise your documentation up to 4 weeks before your interview date.

What happens if I'm unsuccessful?

If your outcome at your chosen level is unsuccessful, you will need to undergo a further interview.

Who decides my final supervision level?

The Medical Board of Australia, considering your PESCI outcome and report recommendations, your qualifications and experience, your Position Description, and the supervision and support available.

How much does the IME PESCI cost, and how do I book it?

The exam is booked directly with IME. Check IME's website for current fees and dates.
